Donal Donal O'Neill provides general consultancy services in the area of impact of industry on host societies, with emphasis on socio-economic factors and long-term effects, including advice on strategies and organisational structures required to mitigate negative impacts and achieve "win-win" solutions for both industry and the society (at local, regional and national level) in which it operates.

An extension of the above, and integral with it, is development of scenario-based role-playing simulation tools, primarily for industry but also used in university coursework in Oxford (UK) and Columbia (New York City), building on insights gained from earlier experience in the Oil and Gas Industry worldwide and marketing of these to companies on a consultancy basis.

Prior to becoming a consultant Donal spent some 36 years with Shell, almost a third of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. The last position he held between 2000 and 2004 was Vice President: External Affairs and Social Performance, a position specifically requested by Donal so that he could "plough back and institutionalise" the experience he had gained in managing oil and gas ventures in challenging environments and implement his belief that "Management of the industry's impact on its host societies is as important as its technical and economic management of its oil and gas assets". Before that time Donal held a number of senior operational positions with the company including Managing Director of Shell Venezuela Exploration and Production between 1996 and 2000.
